Italian Council is a project of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture born in 2017 with the specific task of promoting the production, knowledge and dissemination of creation contemporary Italian in the field of visual arts . For the first five editions , the Italian Council funded 40 projects proposed by museums, public and private non-profit organizations, universities, foundations and committees and associations non-profit cultural projects which involved the production of one or more new works of art by an Italian artist , with the ultimate aim of increasing the public collections, after a period of promotion abroad.
Since 2019, the Italian Council has renewed itself by encouraging the development of talents and the international promotion of Italian artists, curators and critics , by financing projects that involve the participation of artists in international events or which provide residencies abroad for artists, curators and critics or aimed at the realization of monographic exhibitions at foreign cultural institutions or editorial projects dedicated to contemporary Italian art.
Since 2020, the Italian Council has expanded the types of intervention including support for Guest Curators in exhibitions abroad, support for Collateral actions to the acquisition of works by Italian artists in foreign museums and, in particular, the disbursement of Grant for support for artistic, critical and curatorial research.
Over the years, the Italian Council has become increasingly inclusive and aims more strongly at the promotion of Italian art around the world. For this reason, each project must necessarily include collaboration with international cultural realities and a phase of promotion abroad . The requested funding cannot exceed 80% of the total amount , with a maximum ceiling that varies according to the type of project presented. The Grants are intended to support projects by artists, curators and critics carried out in collaboration with foreign bodies ( residences at accredited institutions or research artistic, critical and curatorial) and do not provide for co-financing by the candidate.
The projects admitted to funding are selected by a Commission composed of five members of high scientific profile chaired by the Executive delegated by the Director-General of Contemporary Creativity and composed by the President of the Technical-Scientific Committee for Art and contemporary architecture in office and by three national and international experts from the world of contemporary art.
