Saturday 12 October 2024 sees the return of the Giornata del Contemporaneo, the major event promoted by AMACI - Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums and realised with the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the collaboration of the Directorate-General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Now in its 20th edition, Giornata del Contemporaneo will, as always, involve museums, foundations, public and private institutions, galleries, studios and artists' spaces throughout Italy, recounting the vitality of contemporary art in our country. Once again this year, to encourage and enhance the widest possible participation, the event will maintain a hybrid format, physical and digital, with online and offline proposals.
The guiding image for this 20th Giornata del Contemporaneo is the work Woman in a Cage (1975/2024) by Tomaso Binga (pseudonym of Bianca Pucciarelli Menna, Salerno, 1931), an Italian artist chosen by AMACI Museum Directors after Michelangelo Pistoletto (2006), Maurizio Cattelan (2007), Paola Pivi (2008), Luigi Ontani (2009), Stefano Arienti (2010), Giulio Paolini (2011), Francesco Vezzoli (2012), Marzia Migliora (2013), Adrian Paci (2014), Alfredo Pirri (2015), Emilio Isgrò (2016), Liliana Moro (2017), Marcello Maloberti (2018), Eva Marisaldi (2019), Armin Linke (2021), Giorgio Andreotta Calò (2022) and Binta Diaw (2023).
L’immagine proposta da Tomaso Binga per la ventesima Giornata del Contemporaneo è tratta da una sua performance del 1974 in cui l’artista, femminista e attivista per i diritti delle donne, si presentava con la testa racchiusa in una gabbia per canarini, facendosi imboccare da mani maschili: una riflessione sulla condizione di subalternità costrittiva della donna e, più in generale, sulle disuguaglianze che si fondano sul privilegio e sulle forme di controllo, spesso presentate come cura e protezione. La gabbia per canarini diventa così una barriera non solo fisica, ma anche metaforica, sull’inaccessibilità alla libertà come diritto inalienabile e a tutti gli strumenti e le possibilità che possono portare ognuno di noi a una condizione di maggiore consapevolezza ed emancipazione.
The leitmotif of this 20th edition is the theme of accessibility, understood in the broadest sense as the removal of cultural, intellectual, sensory and architectural barriers, to guarantee full access to contemporary culture, in response to the need to rethink the art system through greater awareness and more widespread sensitivity.
The Giornata del Contemporaneo renews also this year the involvement of the diplomatic-consular network of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, made up of Embassies, Consulates and Italian Cultural Institutes, and extends abroad from Sunday 6 to Saturday 12 October 2024, encouraging the participation of AMACI Directors in events organised by the foreign network of the Farnesina and by active entities in the countries of reference.
As in previous editions, the event maintains several nuclei of activities, all with free admission: a specific programme of AMACI museums, initiatives developed in collaboration with the foreign network of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the involvement of the network of Luoghi del Contemporaneo promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, and the proposals of the adhering subjects. A very rich calendar of appointments that brings out the widespread network of realities that promote different contemporary languages on the national and international territory.
