On 25 June 2020 the work Ring by artist Francesco Arena will become part of the artistic heritage of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. The project has been selected as one of the winners of the fifth edition of the Italian Council (2019) call, the programme in support of Italian creativity dedicated to the promotion of Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, with the cultural partnership of the Italian Cultural Institute of Barcelona for international promotion.
L’opera è una scultura site-specific, appositamente concepita dall’artista Francesco Arena per il Palatino e trova la sua ideale collocazione nell’area della Vigna Barberini, la ‘terrazza artificiale’ di età imperiale collocata sulla pendice nord est del Palatino che sovrasta l’arco di Costantino e il Colosseo, da cui si gode di una straordinaria vista sulla valle dell’Anfiteatro.
The sculpture consists of a 20 cm thick, 50 cm high bronze ring with a diameter of 410 cm, which is matt on the outside. On the inside, polished to a mirror finish, is engraved the quotation: THE VERY STONE ONE KICKS WITH ONE'S BOOT WILL OUTLAST SHAKESPEARE (The same stone that kicks with the boot will outlive Shakespeare).
The quote, taken from Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse, beautifully sums up our relationship with the things that surround us and that have existed before us and will survive us; it illustrates the stratification of time and the multitude of existing times, human time equal to a handful of decades and stone time made up of eras. Nelle parole della scrittrice inglese l’artista coglie l’anima del rapporto che abbiamo con le cose inanimate e che “usiamo” quotidianamente, per l’appunto una pietra a cui diamo un calcio, apparentemente un oggetto senza alcuna importanza, ma che testimonia con il suo resistere nel tempo l’indifferenza della natura nei confronti del nostro passaggio anche quando questo trasforma una pietra in una statua o in una architettura destinata inevitabilmente con il tempo a divenire rovina e nuovamente pietra.
Per amplificare questo messaggio, l’opera è posizionata intorno a un fusto di colonna, pertinente all’area archeologica del Palatino, e sulla superficie interna lucida della scultura è visibile l’immagine riflessa del manufatto romano, deteriorato dal tempo, insieme alle lettere che compongono la citazione di Virginia Woolf.
