Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity

The Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture fulfils different functions and roles in relation to the promotion, support and valorisation of contemporary Italian creativity, including photography and video-art, applied arts, including design and fashion, and architectural and urban quality. The Directorate-General also supports cultural and creative enterprises and promotes urban regeneration interventions.

 

In particular, the Directorate-General:

 

a) promotes the values of contemporary art and architectural culture and the applied arts;
b) promotes and supports Italian research, talents and excellence in the arts and architecture, photography, design and contemporary Italian fashion;
c) promotes awareness of contemporary Italian art and architecture, photography, design and fashion abroad, without prejudice to the competences of and in agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation;
d) promotes creativity and production in the field of contemporary art and architecture, photography, design, fashion, and raising awareness and promoting the work of young artists and creatives, also through competitions;
e) activates and promotes on the national territory innovative and participatory processes finalized to urban regeneration and development through culture, also through agreements and conventions with public and private institutions;
f) gives its opinion, for the area for which it is responsible, on the annual and multiannual intervention programmes proposed by the holders of the peripheral management offices and the regional secretaries, on the basis of the financial flow monitoring data provided by the Directorate-General for Organisation and the Directorate-General for the Budget;
g) elaborates, also on the proposal of the owners of the peripheral management offices, in consultation with the Directorate-General of Education, Research and Cultural Institutes and in collaboration with the Institute for the Digitization of Cultural Heritage - Digital Library, the programs concerning studies, research and scientific initiatives in the field of inventory and cataloguing of contemporary works of art and architecture;
h) manages the preparation and implementation of the Plan for contemporary art referred to law n. 29 of 23 February 2001;
i) promotes the quality of the architectural and urban planning project and work; participates in the creation of public works or provides advice on their design, with particular regard to works intended for cultural activities or those that have a particular impact on the quality of the historical-artistic and landscape environmental context; also promotes initiatives for urban regeneration, including through special agreements with local and regional authorities, universities and other public and private entities;
l) declares the important artistic character of contemporary architecture, pursuant to and for the purposes of article 20 of the law of 22 April 1941, n. 633, and article 37 of the Code;
m) admits to economic contributions the architectural works declared to be of an important artistic character and the interventions recognised as being of particular architectural and urban planning quality in accordance with article 37 of the Code;
n) promotes, after consulting the Directorate-General for Education, Research and Cultural Institutes, training programmes in collaboration with universities, regional governments and local institutions, in the field of knowledge of contemporary art and architectural and urban culture, photography, design and fashion;
o) promotes, in agreement with the Directorate-General for Archives and other institutions in the sector, research activities, knowledge and enhancement of art, architecture, photography, design and fashion archives;
p) provides support and technical-scientific advice to the Ministry's offices in the areas of competence;
q) manages and coordinates, also through the peripheral offices of the Ministry, the consultation with the Regions and local authorities, in the perspective of growth, social inclusion and territorial cohesion, in order to promote and implement programmes and plans for urban regeneration and redevelopment, including environmental regeneration, of urban peripheries, also in the framework of national and regional programming of European funds;
r) monitors the creation of works of art in public buildings pursuant to law n. 717 dated 29 July 1949;
s) ensures the coordination and implementation of initiatives for the promotion and support of cultural and creative industries on the national territory, in collaboration both with the other Directorates-General and with the other competent national and European administrations; it also coordinates the Desk in Italy on the Creative Europe Programme;
t) exercises the functions of guidance and, in agreement with the Directorate-General for Budget, of supervision over any legal entity established with the participation of the Ministry for purposes pertaining to the areas of competence of the Directorate-General.
