History of the Directorate-General

The choice to provide the administration of cultural heritage with a division dedicated exclusively to contemporary issues dates back to 2000, the year of the institution of the DARC - Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture, created to accompany the traditional activities of conservation, protection and restoration of ancient heritage with a new directorate dedicated to the promotion, stimulation and valorisation of contemporary creativity. This was a significant innovation: it marked the first integration between the conservation of cultural heritage and the landscape and an attention toward contemporary art and architecture, assigned the same importance as evidence of the past.

Arfterwards, the office has undergone numerous changes, expanding or narrowing its field of action and changing in response to reforms of the Ministry. In 2007, with the institution of the PARC - Directorate-General for the Quality and Conservation of the Contemporary Landscape, Art and Architecture, the Directorate changed its name and function, acquiring a new responsibility for the landscape.

In 2009, PARC was abolished and its functions absorbed by Service 5 of PaBAAC - General Directorate for Landscape, Fine Arts, Architecture and Contemporary Art.

In 2014 the DGAAP - Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries was created, expanding the responsibilities for contemporary issues to include the requalification of urban peripheries, for the first time the specific target of actions by the Ministry.

In June 2019 the name was changed to DGCR – Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity and Urban Regeneration, expanding its functions.

In December 2019 , following a reorganization of the Ministry, the DGCC – Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity was established with the expansion of skills to the sectors of cultural and creative industries, fashion, design and photography, with the division into five units.

In ottobre 2023, a seguito di una riorganizzazione del Ministero, la DGCC – Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea passa da cinque a tre servizi.
