Saturday 7th October 2023 sees the return of Giornata del Contemporaneo, the major event promoted by AMACI - Associazione dei Musei d'Arte Contemporanea Italiani (Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums) and realised with the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture and the collaboration of the Directorate-General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Now in its nineteenth edition, Giornata del Contemporaneo involves museums, foundations, public and private institutions, galleries, studios and artists' spaces all over Italy, recounting the vitality of contemporary art in our country. This year too, in order to encourage and enhance the widest possible participation, it maintains a hybrid format, physical and digital, with online and offline proposals.

The guiding image of this 19th Giornata del Contemporaneo is the work Pa(y)sage Corporel (2023) by Binta Diaw (Milan, 1995), an Italian-Senegalese artist chosen by AMACI Museum Directors after Michelangelo Pistoletto (2006), Maurizio Cattelan (2007), Paola Pivi (2008), Luigi Ontani (2009), Stefano Arienti (2010), Giulio Paolini (2011), Francesco Vezzoli (2012), Marzia Migliora (2013), Adrian Paci (2014), Alfredo Pirri (2015), Emilio Isgrò (2016), Liliana Moro (2017), Marcello Maloberti (2018), Eva Marisaldi (2019), Armin Linke (2021) and Giorgio Andreotta Calò (2022). The image created by Binta Diaw stems from a long research that has as its starting point the black female body in relation to the traces of colonialism present in today's society, and is directly inspired by a popular saying in the Wolof language from the Senegalese tradition: Nit nitay garabam [Human being is care of human being]. The word garab has a dual meaning, plant and medicine/care: through the poetic nature of this proverb translated into an image, the artist emphasises the inseparable bond that unites the human being to Nature and vice versa, and the need to take care of everything that surrounds us, as an integral part of ourselves and our lives.

The leitmotif of the Day of Contemporary Art is always the theme of ecology, connected to that of sustainability: global urgencies that confront us with the need to rethink the contemporary art system through a renewed awareness and a more widespread sensitivity.

Giornata del Contemporaneo renews the involvement of the diplomatic-consular network of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation made up of Embassies, Consulates and Italian Cultural Institutes, and extends abroad from Saturday 7th to Friday 13th October 2023 by encouraging the participation of AMACI Directors in events organised by the foreign network of the Farnesina and by active entities in the countries of reference.

As in previous editions, the event maintains several nuclei of activities, all with free admission: a specific programme of AMACI museums, initiatives developed in collaboration with the foreign network of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the involvement of the network of Luoghi del Contemporaneo promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, and the proposals of the adhering subjects. A very rich calendar of appointments that brings out the widespread network of realities that promote different contemporary languages on the national and international territory.

La manifestazione si avvale del sostegno del patrocinio di: Rappresentanza in Italia della Commissione Europea, Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, Conferenza delle Regioni e delle Province autonome, UPI – Unione Province d’Italia, ANCI – Associazione Nazionale Comuni Italiani, ICOM – International Council of Museums Italia.
